Virgina Anne Holifield
Virginia “Ginny” Holifield passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 18, 2025 in Sacramento, CA at the age of 96. Ginny was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, and everyone who knew her was truly blessed by her very special kindness, and her positive and gentle spirit.
Ginny was born on September 6, 1928, in St. Louis, MO to Virginia Whitener Crowe and Fletcher Standefer Crowe. Her father was a Minister in the Methodist church so while growing up their family moved several times to serve churches in Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri. She enjoyed her youth with her three sisters and one brother.
Virginia attended Southern Methodist University and then graduated from the University of Missouri. After college she began working for Trans World Airlines (TWA) as a “stewardess”.
In 1950 while working on a TWA flight she met a passenger, James “Jim” McCutcheon Holifield. They both knew right away that they were meant for each other. Jim would travel from airport to airport to meet Ginny’s flights. They were married on August 25, 1951 and remained married and inseparable for 68 years until his passing on May 17, 2020.
Following the marriage Jim and Ginny and their growing family lived in Philadelphia, PA, Los Angeles, CA, and Wilkes Barre, PA. Ginny was by Jim’s side throughout his dental and orthodontic school education and finally in 1961 they settled the family with their three young children in Sacramento, CA.
In Sacramento, Ginny became involved in the community through bridge groups, the First Methodist and Christ Unity churches, their neighbors, the FMCA motorhome club, and developed many cherished long-term friendships. Jim and Ginny had a passion for traveling and were early owners of “busses”, now known as motorhomes or RV’s. This hobby would allow them to travel regularly to visit relatives across the country. Over the years they owned many different RV’s and took many varied road adventures across both North America and South America. They drove from the far reaches of Alaska to the very tip of South America and everywhere in-between. Other trips took them to China and Europe. They were very involved in the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) and attended 50 straight national rallies.
Above all Ginny was a loving wife and mother, and a loyal friend. She is survived by her sisters Ruth Drissell and Carol Ruffatti, daughter Sharon (Walter) Holifield Lovell, sons James “Jamie” Holifield and Steve (Terri) Holifield, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Jim, brother Fletcher Crowe, and sister Mary Crowe.
