Paul Choi Kwong

A loving husband and father – Paul Choi Kwong, was born in Canton, China, on March 23^rd, 1945, to parents Jack and Cheung Mei Kwong.

Paul’s siblings were oldest sister Emma and deceased husband Lee Ling, brother Ned and wife Helen, deceased brother Jason and wife Sharon, and younger sister Nancy and husband Tony. Paul has many nieces and nephews and their children.

Paul wed Anita in late 1970 in front of family and friends.

Paul and Anita owned and operated Kwong’s Shell Auto Care in Sacramento, CA – the location serviced vehicles in all surrounding neighborhoods. It was known for its excellent customer service, smart technicians, and immaculate vehicle care. Paul displayed his passion for being Mr. Fix-It and helping his customers daily for the next 13 years. Not many people could consider themselves lucky to work 12 hours days and come home covered in grease and oil, but he loved it. The hard work never stopped him, and it afforded his family a better future.  Paul and Anita always measured their success by their family as they have three wonderful sons, Phillip, Glenn, and Michael.

In 1982, Paul and Anita moved on to open Kwong’s Palace Restaurant in Oroville, CA, to bring the joy of Cantonese cuisine to the local residents. Paul developed his recipes from his brother, Ned, and years working at the Coral Reef Restaurant. Paul and Anita successfully operated the restaurant until their retirement in 2000.

Although he planned to enjoy his retirement, Paul was drawn to another calling and decided to become a special education teaching assistant for Sacramento City Unified School District.  Family and friends were happy to see how patient and caring he was with the kids. Most of his students called him “Grandpa” when they saw him. The students loved him, and he could match their energy and enthusiasm at school every day for nearly ten years.

During his second retirement, Paul traveled across the world with his wife as they enjoyed many trips throughout the Western US, National Parks, Las Vegas, Florida, and Eastern Seaboard, as well as many exotic countries in Europe and Asia.

His last moments on this earth were peaceful as he was on the water relishing the sport of fishing that he loved so much. We will miss his smile, spirit, commitment to family, and joy for life.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of an incredible 51 years, Anita; son Phillip and his wife, Yumi; son Glenn and his wife, Suzanne; son Michael and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
